Have You Been A Victim Of A Failed Hernia Mesh Repair?
Hernia Mesh Repairs Failing at an Alarming Rate
If you’ve had a hernia mesh repair, your health may be at risk.
While these types of surgeries are intended to help patients recover from serious health issues, they often result in dangerous complications that can threaten the lives of those affected.
When hernia repair surgeries go wrong, it often results in serious complications and invasive surgical procedures to correct the damage. The reality is that hernia mesh products have been failing at an alarming rate. Some are even eroding or becoming displaced, causing severe damage to surrounding organs and tissue.
Signs of mesh failure may include the following:

-
Chronic Pain
-
Recurrence of hernia
-
Severe Infection
-
Nausea or vomiting
-
Revision surgery
-
Allergic reaction
-
Excessive and chronic inflammation
-
Improper wound healing
-
Intestinal complications
-
Internal scar tissues
-
Organ obstruction
-
Dense adhesions
-
Bowel entrapment / obstruction
-
Mesh rupture
-
Extrusion/wound dehiscence
-
Tissue damage and/or death
-
Nerve damage
-
Seroma formation
-
Granulomatous response
-
Fistula formation
-
Abscess
-
Erosion
-
Adhesions to internal organs
-
Inadequate or failure of incorporation/ingrowth
-
Rejection
-
Foreign body response

Soda Bottle Mesh… Really?
There are various types of hernia mesh; some are made to remain permanently inside the body, while others are made to eventually be absorbed by the body. Some are biologic, meaning they are made with live tissue, while others are synthetic. The majority of meshes are made up of plastic fibres woven together… the same plastic used in soda bottles. Some hernia meshes are heavily synthetic and designed to support the surrounding tissue after a hernia repair surgery. These mesh products were first cleared by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in April of 2010 only to be withdrawn from the market in May of 2016 after medical professionals expressed concern over results from a clinical trial. The trial was intended to compare two mesh / fixation concepts for Laparoscopic Ventral and Incisional Hernia Repair, but researchers found that the product showed inadequate tissue ingrowth, was too weak to prevent recurrence due to small filaments and large pores forming abnormal adhesions, researchers chose to terminate the trial early due to these concerns.

Poly Meshes Proven Defective
Other hernia mesh products are made from polypropylene and are used to repair hernias and reinforce weaknesses within the abdominal wall. These products are said to have been defectively designed due to their inability to properly attach to the abdominal wall, which can cause serious complications for the patient. Major manufactures of this mesh voluntarily withdrew their Flexible Composite Mesh products from the U.S. market in May of 2017 after multiple studies revealed a high rate of complications. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved these devices in 2010, when a manufacturer used the FDA 510(k) approval program to fast-track its progress and skip the pre-market research and studies process.
Something Smells Fishy
Another type of Mesh is constructed using synthetic fish oil and is designed for use in facial surgical intervention procedures that require reinforcement with supportive material that is non-absorbable, like surgical or traumatic wounds, chest wall reconstruction and hernia repair. It was first approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in March of 2006. This mesh uses Omega 3 fatty acid gel coating derived from fish oil intended to minimize or prevent inflammation and allow effective adhesion of the mesh into the body. Unfortunately for patients who underwent hernia repair surgery using this product, the Omega 3 coating actually prevents the adequate incorporation of this mesh into the body and causes a chronic inflammatory response and other dangerous complications.
It Can’t Get Any Worse Can It?
Actually… it can.Hernias can expand with the mesh. The mesh can migrate through your tissue causing internal injury and damage to other organs. Your hernia might become incarcerated. Incarceration means that the hernia and mesh contents move and become trapped in the abdominal wall’s weak point, possibly leading to bowel obstructions, severe pain, nausea, and vomiting. Doctors can misdiagnose the problem and give you antibiotics, but will not fix the problem. Bad mesh just needs to be removed having a legal team that knows how to fight big medical manufacturing companies and help you get the compensation you need to pay for medical expenses, can mean the difference between living in pain, and living with the knowledge that your health is in good hands.
